FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does a doula do?

A doula provides education as well as emotional and physical support. During your pregnancy, your doula will make sure you are educated about the birth process and are prepared for labor and delivery. As medical questions arise, she can help you to understand your options so that you can make an informed decision for you and your baby. During labor, your doula will provide encouragement as well as comfort measures, positioning, massage, aromatherapy, accupressure and to help you achieve your goals for birth.

Why should I have a doula?

Studies show that having a doula can improve birth outcomes by lowering Cesarean rates and assisted deliveries. Doula support has also proven to reduce the need for Pitocin and pain management. Mothers who use doulas report having a more positive birth experience.

When should I contact a doula?

Doula schedules fill up pretty quickly. Please contact your doula as soon as possible. A deposit of $150 will secure your due date on her client load.

Is a doula the same thing as a midwife?

No. A doula does not perform any clinical skills nor does she diagnose medical issues with the mother or baby. Her scope of practice includes comfort measures, education, and emotional support for the family.

How can a doula help my partner?

A doula does not replace your partner. She actually comes along side them and they can work together as a team to assist the laboring mother. She can guide your partner with suggestions and ideas of how to help during the birth process. She is also there to provide relief when your partner needs a break. Most dads who are reluctant to hire a doula are extremely grateful for the help once birthing day arrives. It's not uncommon to hear a dad say "I don't know how we would have done it without you."

Will you take pictures at the birth?

Absolutely! Your camera or mine? Doulas are great at capturing tender and sweet moments during the birth and immediately following delivery.

What if I want an epidural or need a Cesarean?

Not a problem. Our goal is to help you get the birth YOU want. We do not push or promote any specific agenda. No matter what type of birth experience you desire, your doula will guide you through the medical language to ensure your understanding of each step. Your doula will support you and your partner through delivery and help facilitate a bonding relationship with your baby.

Are doula services covered by insurance?

All nYn doulas are approved on the National Provider Registry and our services may be eligible for reimbursement. You will need to check with your specific insurance plan or Health Savings Account (HSA) to determine eligibility. We can provide you with an invoice and ICD codes for reimbursement.
"Doulas are the most positive innovation I've seen. And that's because they fit in anywhere:
at home, at the hospital, at birth centers."  - Penny Simkin
