WHAT IS A BIRTH DOULA?
Doulas have been present during labor for centuries. Birth doulas have been trained to provide both comfort measures and emotional support. Studies show that having a doula can improve birth outcomes by lowering Cesarean rates and assisted deliveries. Doula support has also proven to reduce the need for Pitocin and pain management. Mothers who use doulas report having a more positive birth experience.
Working With Your nYn Birth Doula
Your doula will meet with you in the comfort of your home prior to birth to learn more about your family and your desires for birth. She will help you finalize your birth plan and ensure that you are educated and knowledgeable about the birth process. Your doula will guide you through the final weeks of pregnancy as questions arise and help you prepare to welcome your baby.
During labor, your doula will stay in contact and come to you when labor is progressing and provide a variety of services including massage, relaxation techniques, positioning, aromatherapy, emotional support, guidance, and more. Your doula will accompany you to your birthing location and stay with you until your baby is delivered. She can also help initiate breastfeeding and bonding with your newborn.
Finally, your doula will follow up with you in your home about a week after the birth to assess feeding and make sure the family is adjusting well. At this postpartum visit, she will help you recall the birth and answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.
